Post-Operative Thoughts (#559)
Since the last episode Wayne ended up having open-heart surgery far sooner than he expected and Brad debriefs that whole experience with Wayne as well as how he is doing in his post-operative recovery. In this highly personal conversation they talk about God's purpose unfolding in our circumstances and how to flow along with him rather than trying to manipulate circumstances in ways that serve us best. Also, on the same day they recorded The Shack movie trailer was released so Wayne debriefed some of the movies process with Brad and how he feels about the final product. No, this does not signal a return to regular podcasting again as Wayne is still in recovery. It was just a chance for two friends to get together and talk about some key events in their lives and share it with those who are interested.

I just really enjoyed this today. Just hearing you two talk about life and your journeys and the love and enjoyment you guys have with each other is wonderful as well. On a side note I also really appreciate that you guys don’t agree about everything and hearing what that sounds like has been a healthy experience for me. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Thanks for the update. Both on your recovery, Wayne and the Shack update. The trailer was amazing. I wanted to thank Brad for his commitment to getting the Shack through Hollywood. From listening to the times y’all shared about the process, I understand it was a long hard road.
I know one person who hasn’t read the book, but is looking forward to the movie. (I have often seen Mack’s story intertwined in his own and wanted him to experience the story.) I haven’t been able to get him to sit down with the story to read, but I am so looking forward to the opportunity to watch the story with him when it comes out in March. Also another friend who loved the book is hesitant about the movie. Movies rarely measure up to the book, and in this case the book was amazing, so the movie has a lot to live up to. For both people and their connection to this story… I want to thank you for your time invested in both projects, especially knowing that some who read the book won’t see the movie and some who will see the movie, haven’t read the book.
As I listened to Wayne’s journey on the podcast, I was reminded of the Three Hebrew men who said, “Our God can rescue us but IF NOT…” I continued on and got wondering if it was only the king who saw the Fourth Man in the furnace–did the Three see the Fourth man or not? And then even further thought about that apocryphal Hymn of the Three Hebrew Children:
” Then the three, as out of one mouth, praised, glorified, and blessed, God in the furnace, saying,
Blessed are You, O Lord God of our fathers: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.
And blessed is your glorious and holy name: and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.
Blessed are You in the temple of your holy glory: and to be praised and glorified above all for ever.

Grateful for the Shack, have never read the book though…the endurance to get to the finish line and your deep seated passion is inspiring, congratulations are in order Brad. Thankful for the shock…not so much, glad to hear Wayne’s voice and that he’s doing okay to this point. Glad that feeling helpless isn’t hopeless… May be feeling Sarah’s back pain from here in Indiana though…have had some severe pain there for the last several months. Yeah, got God…got life. Love you guys, thanks for sharing. You are both awesome…even if you don’t realize it, or what’s going on. lol
I was wondering about the Shack movie. You said it is a different point of view slightly. How is it different from the book? Or do I have to wait to see for myself 🙂

Yes to the last bit. It’s different from the book because it would take an 8 hour movie to do the book. When you compress that into 2 hours and creative people interpret it with what they think makes it better, it can’t help but be different. But overall it is very faithful to the book’s message. How faithful is in the eyes of the viewer!
The slight point of view difference is: in the book, Mack is a disappointed/disgruntled believer –where part of his angst is all the things he is “supposed” to believe don’t match with what he feels and thus his anger gets turned more inward in depression because he doesn’t know how to reconcile them with his experience …. In the movie, Mack is more of an agnostic, he is in a believing family, but he himself hasn’t committed to what he believes or thinks — in order to reach a “general market” audience, the consensus opinion was it was better to shift him in that direction as more people watching might identify with that journey. It does shift the drama a little bit, but we were at pains to maintain its fidelity to the power of the book, and I am honestly quite pleased with how it came out. If you loved the book — you really will enjoy the movie. Some have liked it more (far more than I would have thought) and other prefer the book — but happily, the overwhelming feedback is book fans have thoroughly enjoyed the movie and been deeply moved by it. I will be thrilled to know what you think once it’s out: March 3, 2017. — Brad
